Message From the Director

When I think of the word spring, two definitions come to mind; the first definition acting as a noun, the season after winter and before summer, in which vegetation begins to appear! The second definition acting as a verb, to move or jump suddenly or rapidly upward or forward. Both definitions are reminiscent of recent happenings here at the Hutchinson Health Foundation.

The recent arrival of spring allowed Hutchinson Health to move forward as planned with the official ground breaking of our NEW Inpatient Unit on Monday, April 1st! The 17,400 square foot unit will consist of 18 new inpatient care rooms to be completed in summer, 2020.

Hutchinson Health is also entering spring with a new leader. Jim Lyons will assumed his new role as Hutchinson Health President effective April 12th.  The Foundation is happy to welcome a familiar face into this role. We wish Dr. Steve Mulder a warm farewell and a very happy retirement. We have been told he is looking forward to spending more time at his cabin, with his family, and even taking up cooking!

Last, but certainly not least, we joined HealthPartners a year ago April 1st. The Foundation sprung into our ONE Campaign (Employee Giving Campaign) exactly one year after joining the HealthPartners Family. The employee giving campaign once referred to as our E-Star Campaign, has been newly branded to match the collective employee campaign run together by the seven Foundations within HealthPartners. All donations contributed by our employees stay here at Hutchinson Health and will support the New Inpatient Unit. We have a goal of $60,000 for 2019, which I am very confident we will meet. Our very generous employees donated over $57,000 in 2018 which supported the new Cancer Center.

There are many exciting plans on the horizon for the Foundation. If you are interested in learning more about the Foundation or how to give towards our New Inpatient Unit please, email me to set up a meeting.

I will leave you on this note:

Meet Our Newest Board Member – Gail Gillard

Gail Gillard

We have one more new, but familiar, face returning to the Hutchinson Foundation Board. Gail served on the board from 2009 until 2017 when her 9 year term was up. During her time on the board, she served as Treasurer and was involved in numerous Foundation Committees. We are thrilled to have her positive energy, experience and passion join us once again.

Gail serves on the Board because she enjoys working with other board members who are dedicated to the mission of fund raising and helping to promote the growth of Hutchinson Health. She is proud to support the growth of our local hospice care and Hospital; award grants to hospital and community organizations; and give scholarships to deserving students, which in turn, gives back to our community.

Grateful Recipient – Andrea Marceau, Hutchinson Health Scholarship Recipient

Andrea Marceau, the recipient of the Hutchinson Health Employee Scholarship

Andrea Marceau, recipient of the 2018 Hutchinson Health Employee Scholarship

Andrea Marceau, a hospital services scheduler at Hutchinson Health, was the 2018 recipient of the Hutchinson Health Employee Scholarship. Andrea’s experiences working at Hutchinson Health the past three years have helped shape her career goals and have given her a unique perspective on the importance of quality, local healthcare. When asked how receiving the scholarship impacted her, Andrea shared the following:

“I felt very honored to receive this scholarship from the Hutchinson Health Foundation. There are many hard working students who are deserving, and it was a privilege to be chosen. My education has not taken the traditional course. After twenty years of full-time employment in various areas of healthcare, the time was right for me to pursue my goal of becoming a professional nurse. Through most of my schooling I have been working full-time, along with being a wife and mother, which can be quite challenging.

I will complete the nursing program at Ridgewater College in December 2019 and will then be eligible to take the national licensure test. My career goals are currently being shaped as I learn more about the field of nursing. I have an interest in hospital nursing as well as hospice care.

Hutchinson is an exceptional community. The community is always looking for ways to improve the quality of life for its residents. Providing scholarship opportunities for all types of students encourages growth of the individual student, which spreads to the family and community overall.

Hutchinson’s proximity to the metro allows for many opportunities, yet it still holds on to the small town feel. Working at Hutchinson Health for over three years, I have seen firsthand the care and concern each staff member takes in their work. It’s important to us that each patient receives great care, and the staff incorporates that small town feel into our approach with patients. This type of personal care is a direct result of keeping healthcare local in our community.”

We are currently accepting scholarship applications for 2019 with the deadline date for many nearing. You can find more application and submission details here.

Our Grateful Donors

The ONE Campaign – Hutchinson Health Employees

April 1st saw the rebranding and launch of what has been a successful and popular employee giving program. The ONE Campaign launched exactly one year after joining the Health Partners Family and was formerly referred to as our E-Star Campaign. All donations contributed by our employees stay right here at Hutchinson Health and have a direct impact on our facilities. Improvements to Hutchinson Health, like the recent Cancer Center, and the now in process new Inpatient Unit are made a reality because of the generous support of our employees.

We asked a few of our employees to share why they choose to not only dedicate their time to Hutchinson Health on a daily basis, but also make a recurring, employee-directed financial contribution. A collection of their thoughts can be found below.

“The Foundation does wonderful things within Hutchinson Health and has a huge impact on everyone. I choose to support their efforts because it means a lot to me that our monetary donation stays within the Hutchinson Hospital.” ~ Tammy Stifter, Staffing Scheduler

“I am a strong advocate and believer in philanthropy! Being able to help others by the gifts of time and money brings a sense of satisfaction.  As a lifelong member of this community and as a dedicated employee of Hutchinson Health, I want to see healthcare thrive.” ~ Kara Neubarth, Clinics and RT Operation Services Manager

“I believe donating gifts of time and money demonstrates my commitment not only to my work as an employee, but to our patients, their families and my fellow co-workers. I believe in the mission of the Foundation and the work that they do. I feel that to make our organization stronger, it is crucial to support them at every level from donating time to donating financially.

The Foundation’s focus to keep healthcare local is important to me, as keeping healthcare local is what keeps a community vibrant. It provides accessibility to many health services for individuals and provides economic growth for the community.” ~ Anna Harvala, Human Relations Representative

“I feel that giving gifts of time and money to organizations such as the Foundation is a small way I can help out a wonderful cause. The Foundation does a lot of great things and gives back to our community and healthcare.

Keeping healthcare local is important as it not only provides great service to our community, but it also provides numerous jobs.” ~ Amy McKay, Administrative Assistant

If you are interested in learning more about or participating in The ONE Campaignemail or call Rachael Gemuenden at 320.484.4438. This program is not limited to Hutchinson Health employees, and other businesses and community organizations can also enroll in our payroll deduction program!

New President of Hutchinson Health

The Hutchinson Health Foundation would like to extend a warm welcome to James (Jim) Lyons as the newest President of Hutchinson Health effective April 12th. Jim has been a part of the Hutchinson Health family since 1996 and has extensive experience in hospital and care group leadership; he most recently served as the Chief of Clinic Operations and helped develop a culture of quality improvement and build strong partnerships with our community.

Jim’s leadership in the community and surrounding areas includes serving as a past board member for the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement, where he continues to serve as a member of their audit and finance committee. He has also volunteered as a member of the steering committee for Heart of Hutch and a board member and Vice Chair for the I.J. Burich Family Foundation.

Please join us in welcoming Jim to his new role, and extending our deep appreciation and gratitude once again to Dr. Steve Mulder for his years of leadership for the organization. We wish him well as he retires from a remarkable 37-year career of service to this community.
